Topped with a graceful finial that shimmers in the sunlight, the inside offers an assortment of gently contoured shelves to display precious treasures. Built one at a time by the artist. Beautifully hand painted and as always, can be colored to your specifications. Ask me about an option to convert this into a puppet stage! Assembles easily without tools. 47 x 68 x 22"d.    Additional Views: detail of crown
*Sales of Isabella's Imaginarium support Allegany County's Imagination Library!

"Adirondack Chair" Merlot or Zin. Manchego or Brie. Alone or with friends. Whatever your preference, you'll be comfortable in this Meg Romero version of the classic. Constructed from cedar and finished in Sherwin Williams' top-of-the-line deck stain, there are 42 colors to choose from but most people pick this beautiful blue. Listen closely: can you hear the water lapping gently against the shore? Additional Views: side, rear, pair

"House of Cards" Inks in the Attic! Outfitted with numerous fixed and adjustable shelves and sized perfectly for all manner of computer paper, envelopes, clips and stamps. You can organize it all right here! Hand painted, sporting a for-real branch decorated with wood and leather leaves. Elves not included. 16x12, 75h

"Ebb & Flo" Initially named "Ebb and Flow" because of their gentle ease moving throughout the home, we dropped the "w" when their personalities came shining through! Sized perfectly for sitting, propping tired feet, or holding coffee and a good book. Smashing as a pair, even better in a set of three! Ultrasuede cushion. Each bench shows all four design motifs. 13"sq

"Simon"Not simply a conversation piece... a piece with whom you have a conversation! Mounted securely to the wall and constructed out of birch and poplar, non-toxic acrylic paint. Interior is filled with fixed and adjustable shelves. Antique shoe lasts on axe-handle legs can be re-arranged to display various attitudes: curious, anxious...indifferent. 15x12, 76h

"Roxy" Vivacious!  Exuberant!  A best-seller, Roxy shows off her curves in a modest way. Mounted securely to the wall and constructed out of birch and poplar, non-toxic acrylic paint. Interior is filled with fixed and adjustable shelves.  Antique shoe lasts on axe-handle legs can be re-arranged to display various attitudes: friendly, hip...always upbeat. 23x12, 64h

"Rupert" A proud winner of a 2009 Niche Award, Rupert can, at times, get a bit holier-than-thou. Interior is filled with fixed and adjustable shelves. Antique shoe lasts on axe-handle legs can be re-arranged to display various attitudes: pride, pleasure, and occasionally, disdain. Roxy sets him straight! 18x12, 66h

"Stella" Dearly departed Stella just loved this purple-spotted finish. A big fan of my work, I felt it a fitting dedication. Her hair really looked like this! Interior is filled with fixed and adjustable shelves. Antique shoe lasts on axe-handle legs can be re-arranged to display various attitudes. Like her namesake, she shows wonder, amusement, and joy. 18x12, 73h

"Long Bench" Designed for the foot of a king-size bed and rather Frank-Lloyd-Wrightish, this bench sports a hand-pieced silk upholstered cushion. It shimmers! Looks equally smashing in a shorter version. Shown at 6ft.

"Looking Glass Mirror""Be a piece of Art or Wear a Piece of Art."  Here's an amusing way to confirm or deny your current status, as per Oscar Wilde's statement. Adding function to a hallway, a bedroom... it even works nicely over a console table. I have one hanging over my bathroom vanity! Solid poplar, hand painted, heavy-duty picture wire and hooks.

"Teacher's Pet" I'd choose an actual antique shop over eBay any day, but sometimes on those dark, cold winter days, I allow myself to be seduced by the overwhelming offerings found there. I'm not quite sure that this glove form is the "antique" that the seller said it was, but it sure was fun to work with! Cabinet interior is outfitted with shelves and cubby holes, and built in two pieces for easy transport.

"Large Purple Cabinet" See what happens when my husband is not available to name my work? "Large Purple Cabinet"? At least I'm good with color...The copper looks fabulous with the darkish finish! Interior outfitted with shelves and cubbyholes, and built in 2 pieces for easy transport.

"Blue Cabinet" I was painting and I couldn't stop! The rope-turned legs are magnificent. Two doors, and built in two pieces for easy transport

"Ruth's Bed" She likes the high post. She likes the low post. Loves the leaves. Can we add a bird? Loves curves. Wants Asymmetrical... Three months and 118 e-mails later, I rented a van and delivered the bed and stands. Happy customer = happy artist!

"Ruth's Nightstands" Her side. His side. Much more stuff on her side than his side. (No surprise there) He likes 'turned', she likes 'tapered'. How to balance the look and be different at the same time? Velvet and silk-lined drawers, decorated inside and outside. (link to drawer shot)
Leather leaves and a copper wrap adorn the pulls. Very sophisticated, and yet...somehow whimsical?

"Zoo" I was so excited to show off this beautiful new piece, and I did so at a holiday event in Boston. Imagine how crestfallen I was when the first person down the aisle said "Look! That piece comes with its own feather duster!" It turned out o.k. because there were plenty of other people who thought it was just great, and one who purchased it.

"Rubicon" It was at that same show in Boston that I introduced "Rubicon". It was there that a passerby pointed to this piece and said "It's Queen Elizabeth meets Beetlejuice". Right there: that was worth the price of admission for me! I've been using that line for eight years, and I still love it! Named "Rubicon" as it was the first piece I built that had arms. 52"x19"

"Ruby" A simpler version of the best-selling "Rubicon". I've built these two benches in many sizes and many color arrays, each one striking in its own right. 48x19""

"Marco Polo Trio" Zanzibar, Samarkand, and Tabriz.
Designed to stack one on top of the other, the rich fabrics and myriad patterns look equally fabulous when scattered about the room. Ultrasuede. Also sold individually.
24" sq, 15"sq, and 12"sq.

"Big Bench" This piece gets the prize for "most tassels on one piece of furniture".  In fact, the pillows were added specifically and only as a place from which to hang more tassels, which brings the total to eight! 76" long

"Concerto" The "shop" was actually a storage closet in an Upper East Side skyscraper. I asked the ephemera dealer for "very pretty sheet music", and he produced facsimiles of Bach's and Brahms'. Very different styles, each beautiful. I purchased the books, and use them as the basis for my "Concerto" collection. These pieces can also be done with copies of your documents/sheet music/love letters. Striking with black velvet seats!

"Taxi!" The reporter was on his way...I was frantically cleaning up the studio. In the trash can went the scraps of yellow, then the scraps of checker. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw it: a Taxi. I called my friend Marcy, who works in the Upper East Side: "Tell me everything it says on the door of a New York Taxi!". Winner of a 2004 Niche Award.

(Recent printing reflects current rates.)

"Shazam Totem" Shazam!  Kaboom!  Zap!
Bright colors, huge tassels. Stacked or individual, these pieces make quite a statement! Ultrasuede. 15", 24", 32"

"Tasseled Spectrum" It's nice being married to a guy who thinks you can do anything, but I thought he went a bit too far when he said "You need to make your own fabrics". Well, after some experimenting, I am indeed making my own fabrics! The felted wool lends itself beautifully to rich colors and bold strips...don't you love the squiggle with the tassels on either end? 30x19

"Sky Box" Looking for some work that was less stressful on my back, I started down the path of decorative, yet functional, boxes. Although these are indeed good fun and very easy to ship, it wasn't too long before I yearned to make the Big Stuff. It works out fine when I ask for help moving the bigger pieces around!

"Apple Box" I was so pleased when friends purchased this gem of a box! I always enjoy seeing it in their home. People ask me what the apple means... it simply means I love the shape, the color, and I especially love the stem and little leaf that pokes out the top!

"Skytop Box" The smallest of the little boxes! I recently gifted one of these as a "Thank You for allowing me to spend the weekend in your guest house". My hostess was thrilled, and set it carefully on a shelf in the kitchen. Later that week, she re-painted the walls to more effectively show-off her little box!

"Make Merry Candlesticks" Imagine how surprised I was to learn that the Associated Press distributed this image! Now that was a busy month... Solid, turned wood and painstakingly finished, gold leaf details. These particular pieces are sold as a set, but I occasionally work on a run of singles: please inquire.

"Cordelia's Shoe Box" Paper clips, spare keys, or Good Wishes, this laugh-out-loud box keeps them safe and secure, and in high style!

"Mirror Matrix" Assembled for a gallery show, these small mirrors hanging together are a striking collection and separately, each a little gem. When viewed from one side, the colors gently change and blend. When viewed from the other side, bold, graduated stripes appear! My husband, the very patient engineer, hung them with a plumb bob and a level. Each 9" square

"Woodlands Cabinet" A table-top cabinet designed for stationery. (In case you got this far into my site without figuring it out, yes! I am obsessed with stationery and all things paper.) A velvet-lined box with wood and polymer finial glows in the gentle spotlight. A small (you guessed) velvet-lined drawer for pencils and pens.

"Fibonacci" This eye-popping nautilus is just the ticket to keep the little things organized: a stock of inks, bottles of aspirin, the evasive sets of keys. Beautifully finished on the inside too. Non-toxic acrylic paint, graphite, plenty of gold leaf for a soft glimmer.

"...and I want the front of the cabinet to match this color, right here", she said, squinting and pointing to the very delicate stamen of the flower, one of many that frolicked across the drapery panel.

The process for a custom piece can be that which suits your style: it can be the "please-match-the-stamen" process noted above, or, it can be a bit more loosey-goosey. Not long ago, I watched silently as Kurt Detwiler unwrapped and placed a very fine bicycle sprocket on my workbench..."Build me something" he said...

Ruth's Bed Drawing Ruth's Bed Maquette Ruth's Nightstands In Progress
This bed was a perfectly delightful project and a textbook example of "custom furniture". Existing furnishings included a stained-glass window and a pair of dynamite lamps. Photographs and fabric swatches from the client coupled with a great deal of faith and trust and we were well on our way.
We met in Baltimore: the waitress brought us the lunch menu and I proposed a very nice, very symmetrical poster bed and a pair of very nice, very symmetrical night stands. Well, we had a totally different set of drawings when the waitress brought us the dinner menu!
Working off the marked-up sketches, the scale models confirmed that we were all "on the same page". (I couldn't resist putting John in a letter sweater!) Many, many e-mails and digital images kept up the faith and trust, and color chips smoothed the way for the paint and finish.
Custom work does require time and attention. There are decisions every minute; some premeditated and some fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. With good communication, a digital camera, and a possible road trip we can put our heads together, have a great deal of fun and make the exact piece your little heart desires!

"Ruth's Bed" She likes the high post. She likes the low post. Loves the leaves. Can we add a bird? Loves curves. Wants Asymmetrical. Three months and 118 e-mails later, I rented a van and delivered the bed and stands. Happy customer = happy me!

"Ruth's Nightstands" Her side. His side. Much more stuff on her side than his side. (No surprise there) He likes 'turned', she likes 'tapered'. How to balance the look and be different at the same time? Way-cool drawers, leather leaves and a copper wrap finish off the pulls. Very sophisticated, and yet...somehow whimsical?

"Detail" Velvet.  Silk.  Stars, stripes and checks. Decorated inside and out. Apparently I just didn't want to finish these pieces! What would Freud say about that? Solid wood drawer guides.

"Simon Reno" Custom-colored, and specially sized, this Simon is now amusing children at the newly-renovated Renown Health in Reno, Nevada. There are plans afoot to incorporate him in some "activity sheets" for the children that will further amuse, entertain, and most importantly, distract.  www.renown.org

"Spectrum Bench" Installed in a very busy medical office, "Spectrum Bench" finishes off a long hallway full of artwork. From the waiting room, one can catch glimpses of it as doctors and patients travel to and fro.

"Light Touch" My original drawings show lamps on either end, and then I stumbled across this cast iron hand. What's a girl to do? The leather is magnificent, purchased in California during a visit with my mother-in-law. Although "Light Touch" is not terrifically comfortable, it is lots of fun to look at! Never to be made again...

"Fast" So, here I was, cruising the isles of the antique mega-mall. By myself, minding my own business, when suddenly this crusty old marine propeller hollered my name! It's times like this when you find out who your friends are, and in this case, it was Kenny, the blacksmith: he got it all cleaned up and it glows beautifully. And no, it doesn't spin when you sit down.

"Loud" Scrolled across my trade show banner is my version of President Teddy Roosevelt's famous remark: "Speak Softly and Sit on a Loud Bench". I actually had people sit on the benches and expect them to make noise! Well, this piece takes care of that! "Bright" was the third and final piece in the series. (link to press page, anchor to MD Life item)

"Eve's Cabinet" When groups of school children visit my studio, I'm always sure to point out my scrap pile: sloppy joints, bad proportions, muddy finishes. "Make Lots of Mistakes!" I tell them. Like this cabinet: a big mistake. It's cute, but did I really think this was going to stand up? "Don't be afraid to try new things!" I say, as they file out the door, each with a big smile and a small paper bag full of wood scraps...
